Simeone, Julian Alvarez and the waiting game at Anfield: Atletico are building something bigger

Simeone even admits Iraola has the edge in enthusiasm: “When you take charge of a new team you have enormous enthusiasm that you transmit to your players. In this aspect, Iraola is superior to me.” Those words show Simeone is reading Liverpool’s psychological state carefully.

Atletico do not need a perfect victory to prove their Champions League ambition. They need a performance that shows the team is regaining confidence after a busy summer. Julian Alvarez not starting does not mean he is outside the plan. It may be Simeone protecting him from unnecessary pressure at one of Europe’s most demanding venues.

The dressing room never lies — only the listeners are not patient enough. Simeone is telling his players that September is not the time to judge everything. Liverpool is a test, but the season is a long journey. The real question is not whether Julian Alvarez starts, but whether Atletico can remain patient enough to build something lasting under the bright lights of Anfield.
